on May 5, 2014 in Quickstep

One thing that shows such as Dancing with the Stars has done is raise awareness of some of the most popular dance styles in the world. One such dance style that has garnered quite a bit of attention is that of the quickstep dance. As with any new dance that you try to take on, though, there are some things you are going to have to take into account if you want to truly master the style over the long-run.

Prepare Yourself Mentally and Physically

This goes for any new dance style you are trying to learn, but you have to mentally and physically get yourself ready for the quickstep. The quickstep dance is a hybrid of both the Charleston and the Foxtrot dance styles. It is one of the hardest styles to truly master and takes the most proficient dancers years to really nail down. The key when starting to learn any dance is to get yourself ready for what is ahead. Prepare yourself for the struggles, the trials and tribulations that you are sure to encounter. Patience is a key with any style of dance you want to learn.

Work on the Basics First

There are some basic things to learn with the quickstep dance that will get you on the road to mastering it over the long-run. This includes understanding the tempo first and foremost. The quickstep is typically performed with a 4/4 tempo. There are really only a few main steps to it, including a slow step, followed up by two quick steps. These three steps can be nailed down in a rhythmic fashion to allow you to get yourself going with the basics.

More Advanced Varieties of the Quickstep

The quickstep can become a very advanced dance once you progress in learning it. Some of the more complex twists on it include the outside forward step, the lockstep, among others. These variations should be practiced with someone who really knows what they are doing to help build your confidence and to avoid injury.

Get a Great Teacher and Partner

The quickstep is done in tandem with a leader and a follower. The important thing to remember when trying to learn the dance is that you are going to need a top-notch instructor. This is going to be someone who has a lot of experience and patience in teaching the dance. You are going to surely have some hiccups along the way. In the end, though, you should see a steady progression and improvement over time.

Learning the quickstep dance is all about building up confidence and really getting a sound foundation built with the basics. The dance is an absolute blast and one that is one of more celebrated style types in the world. Truly mastering the quickstep is going to take time, but preparing yourself for the road ahead, learning the basics, and having an instructor that is going to teach you properly will help get you in putting the right foot forward.
